My New Toy

I probably will get some flack for saying this, but I think Asians started the foodie craze. It might be our own upbringing – eating foods that many find disgusting, unappealing, or just plain weird. (Ahem, I’m looking at you anti-durian eater, Andrew Zimmern.) However, that upbringing has made my palate extremely happy. I’m not a picky eater, I cook for fun, and I enjoy experiencing (aka eating) different foods.

Here’s another statement I’ll probably get flack for saying. I think Asians started with the DSLR camera craze. There I’ve said it! I’ve finally gotten this one off my chest. It was killing me. (Okay, maybe not.) I’m not sure when it happened, but single-lens reflex cameras are EVERYWHERE. I haven’t seen a point-and-shoot camera in ages; mostly because our iPhones, Androids, and whatnots can take better photos. However, single-lens reflex cameras, now THOSE I’ve seen in abundance. And tell me that you haven’t seen a few DSLR cameras hanging on the bodies of quite a few Asian-American Uncles/Aunties/Sisters/Brothers??? We love our photos, and therefore, love our cameras.

Needless to say, all of this bantering basically means I finally caved and purchased my own DSLR. To be fair, it was an early birthday present from Derek who handed me the cash to purchase this wonderful beauty – a Pentax K-5. Over the past two months I’ve taken it out a few times, and yes many of my photos are horrible, off-centered, or fuzzy as I’m getting used to it, but some of the photos are awe-striking. It’s an art that I hope will get better with time and practice. In the meantime, if anyone wants to share some tips, feel free! Here are some of the pics I’ve taken so far.

‘Til the next time.
